As one of the best boarding schools in NZ, sport is an integral part of education and growth at Woodford House. Our girls are encouraged to participate in sports and recreational pursuits throughout the year; and are actively involved in personal goal-setting where performance, challenge and improvement are key objectives.
From an individual and team perspective, our girls set the very highest standards supported by state-of-the-art facilities and the opportunities to succeed. Our top coaching staff includes ex-national athletes and champions from backgrounds in badminton, tennis, volleyball, athletics, football, hockey and netball.
A healthy body and mind is a core focus at Woodford House and we encourage girls to embrace wellness through healthy lifestyle choices. We value the roles health and fitness play in keeping our students happy and feeling positive. By accepting responsibility for their health, girls work towards building confidence, self-esteem and pride in everything they do.
Our coaches keep up-to-date with the latest advances in sports education. The Wellness programme aims to deliver a range of physical activity options to students outside team sports including Tai Chi, Zumba, Strength and Conditioning, Crossfit, Diving, Activate and Tennis Lessons.
From Year 7 to 13, the main objectives of our Outdoor Education at Woodford House are to encourage group cohesion, leadership, personal challenge, leadership, cultural integration/responsiveness, communication, outdoor knowledge and cross-curricular first-hand learning experiences.
Activities include Rafting, Bush Craft/Tramping, Alpine Tramping, Skiing, Surfing, Rock Climbing, Tubing, Adventure-Based Learning, Local Environment Appreciation, Caving, Gorging, Kayaking. Year 10 girls take part in an annual five-day programme to the Hillary Outdoors Tongariro Centre, where they experience a wide range of outdoor environments and challenges.
All girls are encouraged to participate in sports and recreational pursuits throughout the year utilising onsite and offsite facilities. We have a swimming pool set in beautiful surroundings at the heart of our school as well as a state-of-the-art gymnasium, hockey turf, athletics field, tennis courts, trampolines and a number of walking and running tracks throughout the school grounds. We also have a purpose-built Physical Education classroom, weights room and cardio equipment.
Physical preparation and leadership development are the foundation of the Woodford House Sports Academy. Selection is based on evidence of sporting results, performance, development and the desire to grow within a sporting environment. Through the Academy, girls come into contact with elite sportspeople as role models, guest speakers and mentors.
The Woodford House Sports Academy has seen a high number of representative athletes across a range of sports. Members of the Academy pursue excellence, celebrate success in sport and life and become the next generation of great leaders and role models.
Woodford House delivers a full-service, agistment coaching programme at Golden Oaks Equestrian, a 16-acre equestrian centre in Havelock North.
The Experienced Rider Programme is for students in Years 7-13 and caters to all riding levels from beginner to advanced. The programme has been designed to develop the ambitions and goals of students to help them achieve on horseback and in their lives.
Students receive 1:1 coaching once a week, and they may visit and ride their horse at Golden Oaks any day after school. Students are required to have their own horse and some level of riding experience.
The Golden Oaks Equestrian Centre is a 10-minute drive from Woodford House and has an impressive range of has purpose-designed facilities.
