A rich cultural offering

Performing Arts

Our girls benefit from a rich cultural offering and experience performing arts in various ways through their years at Woodford House. We hold several annual inter-house competitions, a biennial school production and participate/attend a number of co-curricular Music, Dance and Drama events.

The Performance Arts Faculty includes curriculum subjects of Music and Drama, and a number of co-curricular activities (listed below).

Curricular Subjects

Music –
students will learn four key concepts: Understanding Music, Developing Practical Knowledge, Developing Ideas and Communicating and Interpreting Music.

Drama –
students will learn four key concepts: Understanding Drama in Context, Developing Practical Knowledge, Developing Ideas and Communicating and Interpreting Drama conventions and techniques.

Itinerant Tuition

Students can learn an instrument and take Speech and Drama classes during their time at Woodford House. It is strongly recommended that each student chooses one of these tuition options.

Instrumental tuition includes; Piano, Keyboard, Voice, Guitar, Flute, Clarinet, Drums, Saxophone, Brass, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass and Music Theory Speech and Drama, Public Speaking and Theatre in Action tuition.

Co-curricular Opportunities

  • Chapel Choir (Year 9-13, audition)
    Chapel Choir plays an important role in the special character of our School. This group takes part in many of our ceremonies and festivals, as well as competing in competitions such as the Big Sing each year. The Chapel Choir is Woodford House’s premium choir.
  • Up Close Choir (Year 9-13, open)
    Up Close is another of the School’s choirs. Up Close explores a capella repertoire as well as other well-known songs. Up Close compete in competitions such as the Big Sing each year. This choir is open to all Year 9 to 13 students. No audition necessary.
  • Cantante Dolce Choir (Year 7-8, open)
    Cantante Dolce is the School’s intermediate choir. This choir competes in the Kids Sing each year and perform both a capella and accompanied singing. This choir is open to all Year 7 and 8 students. No audition necessary.
  • Kapa Haka
    Kapa Haka is led by a professional tutor and student leader. Kapa Haka compete at Big Sing and perform at school events and Manu Korero.
  • Debating
    We have strong debating teams at Intermediate and Senior levels.
  • Rock Band
    We have a number of bands at Woodford House. These appeal to many of our girls who enjoy playing group music. Many of our students compete in competitions such as RockQuest (Year 9-13) and BandQuest (Year 7-8) each year.
  • Dance
    Contemporary dance led by Jandyra Maciel, a dance tutor. These classes are open to all students (Year 7-13) at a small cost. Students may wish to develop their dance skills to take part in competitions such as ShowQuest and DanceNZMade.
  • School production
    Biennial production with Lindisfarne College
  • Orchestra
    A fabulous opportunity for our instrumentalists to play as a group. This is primarily for classical instrumentalists. Students may wish to start in the orchestra, before progressing onto Chamber Music. This group is led by Sarah Delany.
  • Chamber Music
    Led by Kathy Fletcher. We have a number of chamber groups consisting of around 3-4 students each. These groups perform and compete in the Chamber Music New Zealand competition each year.
  • Flute choir
    A wonderful opportunity for our flautists to play as a group. The flute choir may perform at special school events, including carol services and prizegiving.
